Book of the Week: Baba Yaga’s Assistant, by Marika McCoola & Emily Carroll

Baba Yaga’s Assistant, Marika McCoola & Emily Carroll
Graphic novel/Fantasy

Some kids act out when their families change, but most of them don’t decide to go work for a witch who is rumored to eat children. In this graphic novel, that’s just what happens.

When Masha finds out that she’ll be getting a new stepmom – and a new stepsister – she is understandably frustrated. After all, her dad’s been ignoring her for years – ever since her mom died. But he had the time and energy to go find a new family?

Then she sees a newspaper advertisement for a very unusual job: an assistant to Baba Yaga, a famous witch from Eastern European folklore. She’s fairly terrifying and has a lot of demands – she wants an assistant who will cook and clean and carry for her…and she really wants someone who can do magic. Which Masha can’t.

…right?

If she’s going to get the job – and, you know, not get eaten by the fearsome witch – she’ll need all of her skills and all of her courage. And who knows – maybe she’ll get a happy ending after all.
